Introduction
Mutual funds look simple from the outside. You buy units, the fund invests, and you receive either a dividend or a profit when you sell. The tax rules are less simple. Two different taxes can apply, they are charged at different rates, and the rate depends on what the fund holds and on your filer status.
Understanding this matters because the tax is deducted before the money reaches you. If you do not know the rule, you cannot check whether the right amount was taken, and you cannot report the income correctly. This guide explains how mutual fund income is taxed in Pakistan for tax year 2027, how to calculate it and how to report it. It also covers what the Finance Act 2026 changed.
Quick Answer: How Is Mutual Fund Income Taxed in Pakistan?
Mutual fund income in Pakistan is taxed in two ways: tax on dividends deducted by the fund at source, and capital gains tax deducted when you redeem units. For tax year 2027, individuals on the Active Taxpayer List generally pay 15% on redemption gains and 15% or 25% on dividends, depending on fund income.
- Dividends are taxed at 15% on the part earned from equities and 25% on the part earned from debt securities (individuals and AOPs on the ATL).
- Capital gains tax on redemption is 15% for individuals and AOPs, for stock funds and other funds alike. Companies pay 15% on stock funds and 25% on other funds.
- Tax is deducted at source by the fund, so your payout is already net of tax.
- Investors not on the ATL face higher withholding rates, so check your status before you invest.
What Is a Mutual Fund, and How Do Investors Earn From It?
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in a portfolio of shares, government securities, bank instruments or a mix of these. An asset management company (AMC) manages the fund, and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) regulates the sector. Each investor owns units in proportion to the money invested.
Investors can earn in two ways, and each has its own tax result:
- Dividends: the fund distributes part of its income to unit holders. This is what the dividend tax rules cover.
- Growth in net asset value (NAV): if the NAV per unit rises, you can redeem your units for more than you paid. This gain is what capital gains tax covers.
What Is NAV?
NAV is the value of one unit. It is calculated by taking the fund’s total assets, subtracting its liabilities, and dividing the result by the number of units in issue. Your gain on redemption depends on the difference between the NAV when you bought and the NAV when you redeem.
Do Mutual Funds Pay Dividends?
Many do, but not all. Some funds distribute income regularly, while others retain it so that it is reflected in the NAV instead. Your fund’s offering document and your AMC’s statements show which approach your fund follows. If you want to understand how listed company dividends differ, read our guide to tax on dividend income in Pakistan.
What Is Mutual Fund Taxation in Pakistan?
Mutual fund taxation is the set of rules under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 that decides how much tax you pay on profits from collective investment schemes. The Finance Act 2026 amended these rules with effect from 1 July 2026, unless a provision says otherwise.
There are two taxable events for an investor:
- A dividend (profit distribution): the fund pays out part of its income. Tax is deducted when the payout is made.
- A redemption: you sell units at a higher net asset value (NAV) than you paid. The fund deducts capital gains tax on the gain.
The fund management company or asset management company (AMC) acts as the withholding agent. It calculates the tax, deducts it and deposits it with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). You do not pay it separately, but you still need to understand it for your return and your wealth statement.
Which Funds Does This Cover?
The rules apply to mutual funds, collective investment schemes and REIT schemes. In practice, retail investors meet them through open-ended funds offered by AMCs. These include equity funds, money market funds, income funds and Islamic funds. The Mutual Funds Association of Pakistan (MUFAP) publishes the industry’s fund categories and performance data, which helps you work out what type of fund you hold.
Key Terms Every Mutual Fund Investor Should Know
- Capital gain: the profit you make when you redeem units for more than you paid. Our capital gains tax guide explains the wider rules.
- Redemption: selling your units back to an open-ended fund at the prevailing NAV.
- Dividend withholding tax: tax that the fund deducts from a dividend before paying you. For mutual fund dividends it is a final tax.
- Withholding agent: the person or company legally required to deduct tax and deposit it with the FBR. For fund payouts, this is the fund or its AMC.
- Active Taxpayer List (ATL): the FBR list of taxpayers who have met their filing obligations. Your position on it changes your withholding rate. See how to check the ATL.
- Final tax: tax that settles your liability on that income, so you do not pay further tax on it. Our guide to the final and normal tax regimes explains the difference.
- Tax year: the 12-month period for which income is assessed. Tax year 2027 runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.
Who Actually Pays the Tax: The Fund or the Investor?
The investor bears the tax. The fund itself is generally exempt from income tax at fund level, provided it distributes at least 90% of its accounting income to unit holders as the Second Schedule requires. Because the fund is not taxed on its income, the tax is collected from you through the dividend and redemption deductions.
The Finance Act 2026 added a practical improvement here. A commissioner can now issue an exemption certificate covering the whole tax year to a collective investment scheme or REIT that distributed 90% or more of its income in the preceding tax year. Previously, certificates were issued for part of a year, which caused renewal problems mid-year. This is a fund-level matter, but it explains why you are not taxed twice on the same income.
How Are Mutual Fund Dividends Taxed in Pakistan in 2026?
Mutual fund dividends are taxed at source under section 150, and the tax is final. The rate depends on how much of the fund’s income came from equities and how much came from debt securities. It also depends on whether you are on the ATL.
| Part of the dividend | Filer (ATL) | Non-filer |
|---|---|---|
| Income derived from equities | 15% | 30% |
| Income derived from debt securities (individuals and AOPs) | 25% | 50% |
| Income derived from debt securities (corporate recipients) | 29% | 58% |
These figures follow the First Schedule rate card for tax year 2027. Always verify them against the latest FBR text of the Ordinance, and see our withholding tax rate chart for 2026-27 for the wider context.
How Does the Equity and Debt Split Work?
The law links the dividend rate to the proportion of the fund’s income that came from average annual investments in debt securities and in equities. A fund that holds mostly government securities and money market instruments will have a larger debt component. An equity fund will have a smaller one. Your AMC applies the split and shows the result on your dividend advice.
What About Reinvested Dividends?
Choosing to reinvest does not avoid the tax. As a general principle, the dividend is taxed when the fund distributes it, whether you take it as cash or use it to buy more units. Check your AMC’s dividend advice and annual statement to see exactly how your reinvested amount was treated.
How Are Dividends Taxed for Corporate Investors?
Companies that receive the debt-derived part of a mutual fund dividend face a higher rate of 29% for filers. This is higher than the 25% that applies to individuals and AOPs. Corporate investors should also review the wider corporate tax position in Pakistan for 2026, because super tax and other levies apply separately at company level.
For a deeper look at section 150 across shares, REITs and funds, read our guide to tax on dividend income in Pakistan.
How Is Capital Gains Tax Charged When You Redeem Mutual Fund Units?
When you redeem units, the fund deducts capital gains tax on your gain. The gain is the redemption value minus your purchase value. For tax year 2027 the rates are:
| Investor | Stock funds | Other funds |
|---|---|---|
| Individual and AOP | 15% | 15% |
| Company | 15% | 25% |
If a stock fund’s dividend receipts are lower than its capital gains, the deduction rate is 15%. Our wider guide to capital gains tax in Pakistan explains how this fits with shares and property.
Is There Any Relief for Long-Term Holders?
Yes, but it is narrow. No capital gains deduction applies if you acquired the units on or before 30 June 2024 and held them for more than six years. Because 30 June 2024 is the last qualifying purchase date, no unit can meet the six-year test before shortly after 30 June 2030. Units bought after that date do not receive this relief.
How Do You Calculate Capital Gains Tax on Mutual Funds?
- Find your purchase value, which is the number of units multiplied by the NAV on the purchase date, plus any amount your AMC treats as part of cost.
- Find your redemption value, which is the units redeemed multiplied by the NAV on the redemption date.
- Subtract the purchase value from the redemption value to get the gain.
- Apply the rate for your category from the table above.
- Compare your result with the amount your AMC deducted.
You can run your own estimate with the capital gains calculator before you place a redemption request.
What Happens With Partial Redemptions and Switches?
A partial redemption means only the units you sell are taxed. A switch between funds normally involves redeeming units in one fund and buying units in another, so the redemption side is where capital gains tax arises. Treatment can differ by AMC process, so confirm with your fund manager before switching a large holding.
What Is the Difference Between Dividend Tax and Capital Gains Tax on Mutual Funds?
Dividend tax applies to income the fund pays out. Capital gains tax applies to profit you realise when you sell units. They are separate deductions and you can pay both in the same year.
| Feature | Dividend tax | Capital gains tax on redemption |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Fund distributes income | You redeem units |
| Basis | Fund’s equity and debt income mix | Redemption value minus purchase value |
| Individual rate (ATL) | 15% or 25% | 15% |
| Who deducts | The fund (payer of dividend) | The fund on redemption |
| Nature | Final tax | Tax charged on the gain, deducted by the fund |
The Finance Act 2026 clarified that the tax a mutual fund deducts on the related capital gain is the tax charge on that gain, not merely an advance payment. That removes an old ambiguity about whether a further adjustment was due.
How Does Your ATL Status Change What You Pay?
Your position on the Active Taxpayer List changes your rate significantly. For dividends, the non-filer rates are double the filer rates. A non-filer pays 30% on the equity-derived part instead of 15%, and 50% on the debt-derived part instead of 25%.
On capital gains, the Finance Act 2026 removed an exclusion in the Tenth Schedule that had stopped the 100% increase applying to some section 37A collections. The effect on non-ATL investors redeeming mutual fund units should be confirmed with your AMC, because the fund applies the rate on the day of redemption.
The Finance Act 2026 also abolished the separate higher rates for “late filers” in the Tenth Schedule, and it raised the surcharge payable by late filers who want to be added to the ATL. Learn the difference in our guide to filer, late filer and non-filer status and the key differences between filers and non-filers.
How Can You Check Your ATL Status Before You Invest?
Follow our guide on how to check the ATL in Pakistan and do it before every large investment or redemption. If your name is missing or inactive, read how to remove inactive ATL status, and see the wider benefits of becoming a tax filer.
What Are the Types of Mutual Funds in Pakistan, and Why Does Type Matter for Tax?
Funds differ by structure and by what they invest in. Both affect how much tax you pay.
Open-Ended and Closed-Ended Funds
- Open-ended funds issue and redeem units directly with the AMC at NAV. Most retail investors hold these, and the redemption rules in this guide are written for them.
- Closed-ended funds have a fixed number of units that investors usually buy and sell on the stock exchange. Because the sale mechanism differs from a redemption, confirm with your broker or AMC how tax is deducted on your sale.
Fund Categories by Investment Mix
- Equity (stock) funds invest mainly in listed shares. Their dividends are mostly equity-derived.
- Money market funds invest in short-term debt instruments.
- Income funds invest in longer-term debt securities.
- Asset allocation and balanced funds hold a mix. The tax position depends on how the income splits between equities and debt.
- Islamic funds follow Shariah screening and can sit in any of the categories above.
The key point is that dividend tax follows the income mix, while the corporate redemption rate follows whether the fund is a stock fund or another fund. Read your fund’s fact sheet before you assume which rate applies.
How Does Fund Type Change the Tax?
Fund type matters in two places: the dividend split and the corporate redemption rate.
- Equity (stock) funds: their dividends are mostly equity-derived, so the 15% rate tends to dominate. Companies redeeming pay 15%.
- Money market and income funds: these hold mainly debt instruments, so their dividends tend to carry the debt-derived rate of 25%, or 29% for corporate recipients. These count as “other funds”, so companies pay 25% on redemption.
- Individuals: the redemption rate is 15% for both stock funds and other funds, so fund type changes the dividend position more than the redemption position.
Do Islamic Mutual Funds Have Different Tax Rules?
The provisions summarised above distinguish funds by whether they are stock funds and by their equity and debt income mix. They do not distinguish by Shariah compliance. In practice, an Islamic fund’s tax outcome follows what it invests in, so read its offering document and tax schedule and ask your AMC to confirm. This is our interpretation of the rate card, not a separate FBR ruling on Islamic funds.
Equity Funds Versus Money Market Funds: Which Is Tax-Friendlier?
For dividends, equity-heavy funds usually face the lower rate. For redemption gains, individuals pay 15% either way. Tax should not be the only factor, so weigh it against risk, time horizon and fund costs.
How Much Tax Will You Pay? Two Worked Examples
These examples use hypothetical numbers to show the method. Your AMC computes the actual amounts.
Example 1: Redeeming Units as a Filer
An individual on the ATL bought units for Rs 1,000,000 and redeems them for Rs 1,150,000.
- Gain: Rs 150,000
- Tax at 15%: Rs 22,500
- Amount received after tax: Rs 1,127,500
Example 2: Receiving a Dividend
A fund pays an individual Rs 100,000 in dividends. Assume 70% of the fund’s relevant income came from equities and 30% from debt securities, and the investor is a filer.
- Equity part: 70% × 15% = 10.5%
- Debt part: 30% × 25% = 7.5%
- Blended deduction: 18%, or Rs 18,000
- Amount received after tax: Rs 82,000
If the same investor were a non-filer, the rates would double, giving a deduction of Rs 36,000 on these assumptions. This blend is a simplified illustration of the proportional method.
How Do Taxes Reduce Your Mutual Fund Return?
Tax reduces the return you actually keep. You can estimate your after-tax return in three steps:
- Work out your gross gain or dividend.
- Subtract the tax that applies to you.
- Divide the remainder by the amount you invested.
Illustration
Suppose an individual on the ATL invests Rs 1,000,000 and redeems it later for Rs 1,120,000. These figures are hypothetical.
- Gross gain: Rs 120,000, which is 12% of the amount invested
- Tax at 15%: Rs 18,000
- Net gain: Rs 102,000, which is 10.2% of the amount invested
The same fund return would leave a different result for a company redeeming from a non-stock fund at 25%. Compare funds on an after-tax basis, and check your estimate with the FBR tax calculator guide for 2026-27 and the capital gains calculator.
How Do You Report Mutual Fund Income in Your Tax Return?
You report mutual fund income through the FBR IRIS portal when you file your annual return. Dividend and redemption deductions are final or charged at source, but you still need to disclose your holdings and income correctly. Your units also appear as assets in your wealth statement. Our guide to filing your income tax return in Pakistan covers the full process, and the IRIS registration guide helps if you have not set up your login.
What Documents Do You Need?
- Your CNIC and NTN details
- Your AMC account or folio statement showing units held
- Dividend payment advices
- Redemption confirmations showing purchase and redemption values
- The annual tax or withholding certificate from your AMC
- Bank statements showing the credits
How Can You Verify the Tax Deducted?
- Compare the deduction on each dividend or redemption advice with the rate that applied to you.
- Download the annual tax statement from your AMC’s investor portal.
- Check that the amounts match what appears against your NTN in your records with the FBR.
- Contact your AMC in writing if the amount or the ATL status used is wrong.
See also how to get a tax withholding certificate online.

Why Claim Only What Was Actually Deducted?
The Finance Act 2026 introduced a penalty equal to the excess where a person claims credit for tax withheld at source in an amount higher than the amount verifiably deducted and deposited. Claim only what your certificates and the FBR system confirm.
Can You Claim a Refund of Mutual Fund Tax?
Usually not, because the tax on mutual fund dividends is a final tax and the deduction on redemption is the tax charge on the gain. There is generally nothing to adjust against your other income.
A refund or correction becomes relevant only if the AMC deducted at the wrong rate. A common case is deduction at the non-filer rate when you were on the ATL. Send your AMC proof of your ATL status first. If the deduction stays wrong, a rectification application may be the route, and our guide to revised return versus rectification helps you choose. If you already filed with an error, see how to correct mistakes in an FBR income tax return.
Illustrative Walk-Through: A Dividend Deducted at the Wrong Rate
This is a hypothetical example, not a real client case.
An individual on the ATL receives a Rs 100,000 dividend from an equity-heavy fund. The statement shows a deduction of Rs 30,000, which looks like the non-filer rate. The expected filer deduction is Rs 15,000, so Rs 15,000 may have been over-deducted.
What to do:
- Download proof of your ATL status for the relevant date.
- Write to your AMC with the dividend advice and ask which status it used.
- Ask for a corrected deduction or certificate if it applied the wrong status.
- If the AMC cannot fix it, consider a rectification application and read how to handle a tax notice if the mismatch triggers one.
Keep every email and certificate. You must be able to show the amount that was verifiably deducted.
How Is Tax Handled in Special Situations?
These cases are less common, and the sources we reviewed do not give a separate rate for them. So treat the points below as practical guidance, and confirm the details with your AMC.
Joint Investors
Ask your AMC whose CNIC or NTN the tax deduction is recorded against. If a deduction sits under the wrong holder, it can cause mismatches when you reconcile your records. If you need to correct your return, see how to correct mistakes in an FBR income tax return.
Inherited Units
The Finance Act 2026 set a cost base rule for inherited immovable property. Do not assume that rule applies to inherited mutual fund units. Get written confirmation of the cost value from the AMC, and take advice before you redeem a large inherited holding.
Bonus Units
If your fund issues bonus units instead of a cash payout, ask your AMC how it treats them for tax and which amount it deducted. Do not rely on assumptions here, because the answer affects both your dividend deduction and your unit cost.
Multiple Funds and Multiple AMCs
Keep a simple register of every fund, folio number, units held and annual tax certificate. You will need these to complete your wealth statement, and to explain your source of funds if asked. See our guide on explaining source of income and wealth reconciliation.
Overseas and Non-Resident Investors
Residency changes your filing position. Read how to become a non-resident taxpayer in Pakistan and our guide to filing a tax return for overseas Pakistanis.
How Does Mutual Fund Tax Compare With Bank Profit and Direct Share Investment?
| Investment | Typical individual tax (filer) | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual fund dividend | 15% (equity part), 25% (debt part) | Section 150 |
| Mutual fund redemption gain | 15% | Section 37A, charged by the fund |
| Bank account profit | 20% | Profit on debt, section 151 |
| Dividend from a listed company | 15% | Section 150 |
Bank profit is deducted at 20% for filers, and the deduction is final for most individuals, though it becomes a minimum tax where the yield exceeds Rs 5 million. See our guide to tax on bank profit and savings accounts for details.
For shares, the capital gains rate depends on the acquisition date and your ATL status, so use the capital gains tax guide to compare. A mutual fund also differs from direct stock investing because the fund deducts and pays the tax for you.
What Changed for Fund Investors in the Finance Act 2026?
Coverage of the Finance Bill 2026 in Business Recorder gives the budget background. For mutual fund investors, the main changes are:
- NCCPL now computes capital gains under section 37A for mutual funds, banking companies and insurance companies. These entities remain responsible for depositing the tax.
- The opt-out from the NCCPL computation regime has been removed for persons within its scope.
- The tax a fund deducts on capital gains is clarified as the tax charge on that gain.
- Collective investment schemes and REITs can obtain a whole-year exemption certificate if they distributed 90% or more of their income in the preceding tax year.
- A new penalty applies to claiming excess withholding credit.
- Persons holding FCVA, FCBVA, NRVA or NRBVA accounts receive filing relief in specified cases where their Pakistan-source income is limited to certain debt profit, capital gains and dividends.
For the wider picture, read the top tax changes in the 2026-27 budget. Industry notices from the National Clearing Company of Pakistan, such as its revised capital gains tax rates notice for the previous year, show how the clearing company communicates rate changes to MUFAP investors.
How Does This Apply to Salaried People, Freelancers and Overseas Pakistanis?
The rates are set by investor category and ATL status, not by profession. What differs is how you file.
- Salaried individuals must still disclose investment income alongside salary. See the salaried income tax slabs for 2026-27 and the guide to the final and normal tax regimes.
- Freelancers often invest surplus income in funds, so they should read the guide to freelancer income tax returns.
- Overseas Pakistanis should check residency first. Read the income tax return guide for overseas Pakistanis and the tax rules for overseas Pakistanis.
How Is Mutual Fund Income Taxed for Companies?
Companies pay different rates from individuals, mainly on debt-derived income and on redemptions from non-stock funds.
| Item (company, filer) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Dividend, part earned from equities | 15% |
| Dividend, part earned from debt securities | 29% |
| Redemption gain, stock funds | 15% |
| Redemption gain, other funds | 25% |
For non-filers, dividend withholding rates are doubled. Dividend tax is a final tax, so the company does not pay further tax on that income.
What Else Should Corporate Investors Check?
- Super tax and company-level levies apply separately and are not part of the fund deduction. Review the corporate tax position in Pakistan for 2026 and our guide to corporate tax planning strategies.
- Financial statements: for tax year 2026 and onwards, companies must file their financial statements in an electronically readable format with the return. Scanned or image-only files can be treated as incomplete.
- Registration: a company needs an NTN before it can invest and report properly. See our service for NTN registration for companies.
- Records: keep AMC certificates for every payout so that you can reconcile them with your accounts.
For wider business planning, our guide to tax planning strategies for businesses is a useful companion.
How Can You Plan Mutual Fund Investments Sensibly for Tax?
Good planning means avoiding unnecessary tax cost and avoiding mistakes. It does not mean avoiding tax illegally.
- Confirm your ATL status first. It can double your dividend withholding rate. See how to remove inactive ATL status if it is wrong.
- Understand the dividend option you choose. A dividend is taxed when paid, while growth in NAV is taxed only when you redeem. Think about which suits your cash needs.
- Be careful buying just before a payout. Part of a dividend may simply return capital you recently paid in, yet tax is still deducted on the dividend. Ask your AMC about the timing.
- Do not count on holding-period relief. For units bought after 30 June 2024, the six-year relief does not apply, and for older units no one can qualify before shortly after 30 June 2030.
- Plan around your wider position. Review your individual income tax rates and our general tax-saving tips.
What Are the Common Mistakes Investors Make?
- Assuming the tax is “automatically handled” and never checking the rate applied.
- Not confirming ATL status before redeeming a large holding.
- Forgetting to include units in the wealth statement.
- Mixing up dividend tax and capital gains tax in their own calculations.
- Claiming withholding credit without a certificate to support it.
- Ignoring FBR notices about mismatches between declared and reported income.
What Happens If You Do Not Comply?
Staying off the ATL means higher deduction rates on dividends, and possibly on redemptions. Under-reporting can lead to notices and penalties. Our overview of tax compliance in Pakistan explains the wider consequences, and the guide to the filing deadline helps you check the current due date. You can also read practical ideas on how to reduce your tax liability in Pakistan and general tax saving tips for individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is mutual fund income taxable in Pakistan?
Yes. Dividends are taxed at source under section 150, and gains on redemption are taxed under section 37A. The fund deducts both.
What is the tax on mutual fund dividends in 2026?
For filers, 15% applies to the equity-derived part and 25% to the debt-derived part (29% for corporate recipients on the debt part). Non-filers pay double.
What is the capital gains tax on mutual funds?
Individuals and AOPs pay 15% on stock and other funds. Companies pay 15% on stock funds and 25% on other funds.
Is the tax on mutual funds final?
Dividend tax is final. The deduction on redemption is the tax charged on that capital gain, as clarified by the Finance Act 2026.
Do I pay tax when I withdraw money from a mutual fund?
You pay tax on the gain, not on your original investment. If you redeem at a loss or at cost, there is no gain to tax.
What happens if I am not on the ATL?
Withholding rates are higher. Dividend rates are double, and the effect on redemption should be confirmed with your AMC on the redemption date.
Can I claim a refund of mutual fund tax?
Generally no, because the tax is final or charged on the gain. A correction may be possible if the AMC used the wrong rate.
How do I report mutual fund income in IRIS?
Disclose it in your annual return on IRIS and include your units in your wealth statement. Keep the AMC’s annual certificate for support.
Are Islamic mutual funds taxed differently?
The rate card distinguishes funds by stock or other fund type and by income mix, not by Shariah status. Confirm with your AMC.
How can I verify the tax my fund deducted?
Compare the dividend or redemption advice with your annual AMC tax statement, then check it against your FBR records.
What is a mutual fund?
It is a pooled investment run by an AMC that invests investors’ money in shares, debt securities or both. Each investor owns units in proportion to the amount invested.
What is NAV?
NAV is the value of one unit, found by dividing the fund’s net assets by the number of units. Your redemption gain depends on the NAV when you buy and when you sell.
Do mutual funds pay dividends?
Some do and some do not. A fund may distribute income, or it may keep it and reflect it in the NAV. Your AMC’s fund documents show which applies.
Is tax automatically deducted from mutual fund dividends?
Yes. The fund deducts tax at source before paying you, so the amount you receive is already net of tax.
Does the holding period change the capital gains tax on mutual funds?
For individuals the rate is 15% whatever the holding period. The only holding-period relief covers units acquired on or before 30 June 2024 and held for more than six years.
What is withholding tax on mutual funds?
It is tax the fund deducts and deposits with the FBR on your behalf, either on a dividend or on your redemption gain.
Do companies pay a different rate from individuals?
Yes. Companies pay 29% on the debt-derived part of a dividend and 25% on redemption from funds that are not stock funds.
What documents do I need to verify my tax?
You need your dividend and redemption advices, your annual AMC tax certificate and your unit statement. Compare them with your FBR records.
Is mutual fund income taxed differently from bank profit?
Yes. Bank profit is deducted at 20% for filers, while mutual fund dividends and gains follow the rates in this guide. See our guide on tax on bank profit.
Conclusion
Mutual fund tax in Pakistan comes down to two deductions. Dividends are taxed at source at 15% or 25% for filers, depending on the fund’s equity and debt income mix. Redemption gains are taxed at 15% for individuals. Your ATL status can double the withholding rate, so confirm it before you invest or redeem.
The Finance Act 2026 made the system more consistent. It clarified the nature of the tax on capital gains, extended the NCCPL role and introduced a penalty for excess credit claims. Keep your AMC statements, check each deduction and report your holdings accurately.
